Daily Prayer

As a frequent listener to the Naked Bible Podcast I have been inspired to write a short “daily prayer” that focuses on the Divine Council/ Deuteronomy 32 worldview. Most of the prayer is lifted straight from the Bible, see the endnotes.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.[i]

For the LORD is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed.[ii]  Who among the gods is like you, LORD? Who is like you– majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?[iii] For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many gods and many lords—  yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.[iv]

The Son, Jesus Christ the righteous, is life for he is the light of humanity.[v] The light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.[vi] By dying he destroyed death[vii] and led captivity captive.[viii] For he has ascended and is seated at the right hand of the Father where he prays and intercedes for us.[ix]

From your sapphire throne,[x] have mercy upon your human assembly of Holy Ones, from your sapphire throne, forgive us our sins.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole hearts; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we earnestly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.[xi]

From Zion, the garden and Mountain of God,[xii] the mountain of your assembly, hear our cry.

Let us not be like the nations that stirred you to jealousy with their strange gods; for with their abominations they have provoked you to anger.[xiii] They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever![xiv]

For you LORD have taken your place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods you have held judgment. For you said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you; nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince.” In the Resurrection O LORD, you have judged the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations![xv]

The LORD rebuke you Watchers who lead the nations into sin.[xvi]
The LORD rebuke you Watchers who lead the nations into sin.
The LORD rebuke you Watchers who lead the nations into sin.

For I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver me from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover me with his feathers. Under his wings will I take refuge. His faithfulness is my shield and my rampart. I shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day; nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday. For he will put his angels in charge of me, to guard me in all my ways.[xvii]

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.[xviii] For Christ has disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.[xix]

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever.[xx]

As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.[xxi]
